Internal Medicine

Internal medicine refers to the diagnosis and treatment of diseases affecting any organ that is not part of the musculoskeletal system. It is a very broad category of medicine and includes diagnosis and treatment of diseases affecting the GI tract, liver, kidneys, bladder, heart, endocrine system, neurologic system, lungs, and much more. Our clinic houses a large amount of diagnostic equipment that our veterinarians can utilize for diagnosing and treating internal medicine cases. This includes in-house machines to run various types of bloodwork (CBC, chemistry, fibrinogen, SAA, blood gas, etc), multiple ultrasound machines with specialized probes, a standing endoscopy tower, large beam x-ray, and ECG monitoring equipment, to name a few.

Our veterinarians have experience and expertise in the following areas of internal medicine, to name a few:

  • Upper and lower endoscopic respiratory exams with trans-tracheal wash and broncho-alveolar lavage.

  • Neurologic exams including spinal fluid collection and myelograms.

  • High-detail digital ultrasound for full abdominal exams, cardiac ultrasound, and thoracic ultrasound.

  • Neonatal intensive care with 24-hour continuous care, plasma transfusions and other immune therapy.

  • Geriatric medicine including specialized dental care, dietary management, and routine bloodwork.

  • Diagnostic testing and treatment for fever of unknown origin cases

  • Accurate testing and treatment for endocrine diseases such as Cushing’s Disease (PPID), Equine Metabolic Syndrome, Theca/Granulosa cell tumors, and Insulin Resistance.

  • Specialized cardiac testing such as ECG and echocardiograms.

  • Infectious disease control and testing

Our veterinarians also consult with a number of board certified internal medicine specialists including Dr. Ashley Alward from Southwest Equine, Dr. Tom Lewis from Dermatology for Animals, and with the veterinarians at Eye Care for Animals. We will also refer cases to these specialists if needed to provide our patients with the best possible care.
