Radiology

At Arizona Equine, we have two types of digital radiology machines available. We have a portable computer, plate and generator that allows us to take detailed x-rays in the field and evaluate results instantly. We also have a stationary, high-energy beam machine with an overhead arm that is housed in our indoor treatment area. This machine has a much higher penetration depth, allowing our veterinarians to image areas of the horse that a small portable machine could not accomplish. With our stationary machine, we are able to obtain high quality, detailed images of the neck, back, chest, abdomen, pelvis, and the upper portions of the limbs (femur, humerus, scapula, etc). We are also able to perform myelograms under general anesthesia using the stationary machine. A myelogram involves injecting contrast solution directly into the spinal canal of an anesthetized horse. Myelograms are often used to diagnose cervical vertebral malformations (Wobbler disease) and can identify areas of compression along the cervical spinal cord.
