Reproduction

Arizona Equine offers a range of breeding services to both mare and stallion owners. While we are equipped to handle most routine breeding work, we currently do not perform embryo transfers, ICSI, or oocyte collection from mares. While we offer stallion collection and semen preparation, we currently are not equipped to freeze semen on-site. The services we offer include the following:

Reproductive Evaluations or “pre-breeding exams” for mares:

These examinations are done prior to breeding season in order to evaluate the potential of a mare to become pregnant and carry a foal to term. These exams are also sometimes performed in problem mares during or at the end of breeding season to further understand why they were unable to become pregnant. Components of a reproductive evaluation can include:

  • Reproductive history

  • Physical examination

  • Perineal conformation

  • Palpation and ultrasound

  • Vaginal speculum examination

  • Uterine culture and cytology when needed

  • Endometrial biopsy

  • Other tests including hormone measurement, etc.

If an abnormality is discovered on the reproductive exam, our veterinarians are well equipped to treat and manage issues such as uterine infection, perineal or vaginal malformation/conformational defects, granulosa/theca cell tumors, and more. If surgery is necessary (for example to remove an ovarian tumor), our surgeons are experienced in performing many routine reproductive surgeries and procedures.

Breeding Management

Our team is well-equipped to manage mares for artificial insemination with fresh, cooled-transported or frozen semen. Once a mare becomes pregnant, our team can provide the necessary examinations, ultrasounds, and vaccinations needed at various points throughout the entire pregnancy.

Foaling Management

Arizona Equine is equipped to provide routine and emergent care for newborn foals and their dams. We currently do not offer 24-hour foal watch services unless an expectant mare is at our clinic for other medical reasons. Our foal services include:

  • Large indoor mare and foal stall with video surveillance

  • New-foal wellness exams at 12-24 hours old

  • IgG (maternal antibody) measurement at 12 and/or 24 hours of age to detect failure of passive transfer

  • Enema administration and umbilical cord care

  • Neonatal isoerythrolysis testing and management

  • Emergency services for non-routine events at foaling – dystocia, retained placenta, hemorrhage, etc.

  • Oral colostrum and intravenous plasma for foals with failure of passive transfer.

  • Foal heat breeding services

  • 24-hour intensive care and treatment for critically ill foals

Semen Collection and Analysis

Our clinic has the capability to collect a certain number of stallions for routine breeding each season. Semen evaluation can also be performed to evaluate the semen quality, volume, sperm concentration, sperm morphology and sperm motility. We do offer cooled semen transportation for local stallion owners via FedEx, however we are not currently equipped to freeze semen on site. We have a limited number of semen tanks cooled with liquid nitrogen to store frozen semen that we receive from other stallion owners/clinics. We do not currently offer live cover services.

Reproductive Evaluations or “pre-breeding exams” for stallions:

We also offer basic reproductive evaluations for stallions that includes the following

  • Physical examination

  • Examination of external genitalia

  • Examination of internal genitalia via ultrasound

  • Evaluation for venereal disease

  • Libido/mating ability

  • Semen collection and evaluation

  • Phantom training if needed
